The new Heavy-Duty emissions standards specify precise CO2 reduction targets: -15% in 2025 and -30% in 2030. Thus, commercial vehicles require significant optimizations, including the electrification of auxiliaries and more fine-tuned management of the diesel engine, for example in the exhaust gas recirculation, the air intake throttle valve, the exhaust back pressure valve and the turbocharger.

EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is an emission control strategy for controlling NOx emissions from diesel engines. With EGR, part of the exhaust gas stream is collected, cooled, and then reinjected into the combustion chamber. This reduces the combustion temperature while reducing the richness of the air mixture, i.e. the oxygen concentration (exhaust gases are inert, mainly composed of CO2 and H2O). Consequently, the EGR makes it possible to reduce the rate of formation of NOx and then the emission of NOx into the atmosphere.

EXHAUST BACK-PRESSURE VALVES

Sonceboz’s proven solution for the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve (EBPV) reduces fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to the controllability of Sonceboz’s compact BLDC, the EBPV can operate precisely over a 90° rotation angle and complete the entire stroke in less than 150 ms. Turbo Wastegate

Reducing emissions and improving engine performance requires increasingly precise control of the mass flow of air entering the combustion chamber, which is achieved in conjunction with On-Board Diagnostics. On the diesel engine of commercial vehicles, the turbocharger is placed upstream of the air intake throttle valve. It is used to increase engine power by forcing compressed air into the combustion chamber, allowing more fuel to be injected, thereby increasing engine power. The energy from the exhaust gases is used to drive the turbine and thus compress the intake air.
