New BLDC actuators for air charging in diesel engines
The new smart brushless DC (BLDC) actuator 5843 of Sonceboz is designed to actuate variable turbine geometry, variable nozzle turbines or waste gate on turbochargers of large diesel engines, from 3L to 10L. The 3-phases motor is a high performance electronically commutated actuator, coupled with a highly precise gear train and a powerful cost-effective embedded driver.
Thanks to its small –height below 80 mm- and lightweight design -below 750 gr-, it simplifies the integration of an electric valve for air loop management, either on the cold or on the hot side of the diesel engine. This brushless actuator delivers high peak torque values, up to 4.5 Nm, in a very compact, watertight and robust housing. Thanks to the new CAN bus control electronics with even more functions, processing power, and interface flexibility it is providing to the turbo manufacturers a wide array of functionalities.
Furthermore it can operate in a supply voltage range between 9V and 32V. This brushless DC actuator is delivering short positioning times -below 150 ms-, while providing positioning accuracy for finer air flow control at boost or low speeds. High reliability and service life is guaranteed all over a large operating temperature range, varying from -40°C to 150°C if a water-cooling is integrated inside the actuator’s housing. With an absolute position sensor or a return spring as options, the 5843 is acting as a modular and compact stand-alone actuator. It offers thereby high design flexibility in the connector’s choice to suit optimal electrical interfacing with the customer’s application.
